Thursday: Penfield over Schroeder |
April 29, 2006 - Penfield, Schroeder and Fairport have now proved the idea that parity
is alive and well in the Monroe County Class
A teams. In other close games today, Brockport
beat Athena/Odyssey by one goal as did Aquinas
in their game with McQuaid Jesuit.
Don't
let the final score fool
you into thinking that the Penfield
vs Schroeder game was not close. It was
clearly anyone's game until the last four
minutes and with the exception of a few
over aggressively verbal and non-verbal
altercations, it was a perfect game on a
beautiful afternoon at Penfield.
In a game that featured great defense by
both teams and dramatic key saves by Penfield's
Brian Dell and Schroeder's Dennis Costanza,
the normally powerful offensive players
on both teams struggled to get the kind
of shots that they normally take for granted.
After checking each other out a number of
times, Penfield scored first when Kelly
McKenna hit the nets on an inside feed from
Dave Malone at 8:31. Less than one minute
later, Chris Ferry scored (unassisted) for
Schroeder. At 4:24, Jay Willmes scored for
the Warriors on a pass from Eric Chavoustie
to give Webster the lead, but only for a
couple of minutes as the Patriots came back
with three quick goals before the end of
the quarter. Kevin Green scored first (unassisted)
at 2:11. Twenty-four seconds later Mike
Arvan scored after dodging his defender
and scoring on a stick high, corner shot.
Nineteen seconds later Ben Foster scored
an unassisted goal for Penfield who ended
the quarter up 4-2.
Schroeder scored first in the second quarter
when, at 6:11 Nick Monney scored on dodge
and shoot to bring the Warriors to within
one. After more transition time, Penfield
scored again (McKenna from Arvan) at 3:34
and then increased their lead to three when
Mike Cummings scored at 2:12. Less than
a minute later the Warriors scored (Grant
Catalino) who bulled his way past four defensive
players before scoring at 1:06. The half
ended with Penfield holding on to a 6-4
lead.
At the top of the third quarter Defenseman
Drew Palmer cleared the ball, saw an opening
and scored the unassisted goal for Schroeder.
At 6:40, the Warriors tied the game at six
when Ferry scored on a feed from Catalino.
Penfield came back with two quick goals,
as Mike Arvan scored on an outside shot
at 2:52 and then again from a clear at 1:58.
Jay Willmes scored for Schroeder at 0:32
with an assist from Catalino and Penfield
was ahead at then end of three quarters,
8-7.
Both teams struggled at the top of the last
quarter as the defensive units limited shots
and what shots did get to the goal were
saved by the goalies. In the end, the Patriots
would hold Schroeder scoreless while they
scored three of their own. At 6:56 Green
scored on a feed from Arvan from a clearing
fast break. Connor Rice scored (unassisted)
on a drive from behind the goal at 4:24
and Green scored the last goal of the game
at 3:03 on a pass from Rice.
There were key match ups all over the field
including Penfield's junior defenseman Paul
Vanthof who along with short stick "shut
off man", Mike Cummings were often
successful at keeping Schroeder's Catalino
from getting the ball. Second efforts by
the Penfield riding team also gave a slight
edge to the Patriots in offensive opportunities.
Brian Dell made 14 saves for Penfield (8-1)
while Dennis Costanza recorded 14 saves
for Schroeder (6-2).

(assisted by King). The all important face
off was taken by Alex Caton of the Knights
and Nick Berkompas of the Little Irish.

the face-off sending the ball into the offense
for one last shot. The shot ran wide and
Aquinas took the ball back and with a quick
