Saturday: Fairport over Corning East |
April 22, 2006 - After a tough vacation
week schedule that included a win against
Canandaigua and a loss to Penn Yan, Fairport
finished vacation week with a dramatic 10-7
win over Corning East of Section 4. In other
games Geneva lost a close game to Section
3 powerhouse CNS, Penn Yan beat Shenendehowa
10-2 and Schroeder beat Hamburg of Section
6 with a score of 12-3.
It
was a very soggy day in Corning, but the
ride home was happy for Fairport
as they defeated Section four powerhouse,
Corning East, 10-7. The Red
Raiders had a tough vacation week schedule
and had a win on Tuesday against Canandaigua
and a close loss to Penn Yan on Thursday.
Fairport went up early finishing the first
quarter with a 4-1 lead. At the half it
was 6-2 and 9-5 at the end of the third.
Scoring for Fairport were Pat Reilly (3g-1a),
Ryan Lowe (3g-1a), Dan Scarazzo (1g-2a),
Jeff Sanna (2a), Mike Danylyshyn (2g-1a)
and Shawn Runyon (1g), Geoff Mayor recorded
14 saves for the Red Raiders (6-2).
Leading the scoring for the Trojans were
Matt Tobia and Carter Bloor who each scored
two goals. Head Coach Bob Streeten told
the Elmira Star-Gazette:
“We let them get
out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter.
This was certainly not one of our best defensive
games, but this was another very good team."
Corning East, the 6th ranked team on the
NYSSWA Class B poll last week, drops to
6-2, with their other loss to John Jay-Cross
River of Section 1 (currently undefeated
and ranked 8th in Class A the NYS poll).
After
a slow start and a strong showing in the
second half, the Waterloo
Indians went on to defeat the McQuaid Jesuit Knights
10-7.
The first two goals of the game were
by Nick Cardillo for McQuaid Jesuit. His first
was a bounce shot skipping past Waterloo
goalie Mark Nearpass at 7:49 and his second
was drive to a shot at 1:41. Both goals
were unassisted. With 0:56 left in the first
quarter the Indian’s Josh Mateo scored
on a pass from Winston Boyd (who ended the
game with 4 goals and 4 assists). The first
quarter ended with the score 2-1 for McQuaid Jesuit.
The Knights continued their lead with the
first two more goals at the top of the second
quarter. Both goals were scored by Mark
Hanna. The first was a crease feed from
Evan Gallina at 7:59 and the second was
also a crease feed, this time from Jay Haseley
at 7:14 which gave the Knights a three goal
lead. The next 6 goals, however, would span
2 quarters and all by the Waterloo offense.
At 5:36 of the second quarter, Boyd scored
(unassisted), and the assisted his teammate
Brian Adler for another goal at 1:15. The
half ended with a 1 goal lead for McQuaid Jesuit.
The next four goals were scored at 8:05,
6:44, 6:31, and 4:12: Mike Ruiz assisted
by Boyd, Mateo (unassisted), Ruiz (unassisted),
and lastly, Boyd (unassisted). The four
goal run took Waterloo from a one goal deficit
to a 7-4 lead. With 0:23 left in the third
quarter, Gallina scored for McQuaid Jesuit (unassisted)
and the quarter ended with Waterloo up 7-5.
With 8:49 left in the final quarter the
Knights scored again making it a one goal
game. The goal was scored on a cross-crease
pass and a behind the back shot by Jeff
MacDonald, with the assist credited to Hanna.
Waterloo was next at the 6:01 mark as Boyd
scored again (unassisted), to allow the
Indians to maintain their two goal lead.
McQuaid Jesuit scored again with 5:34 remaining
with another unassisted goal from Gallina
but Waterloo then scored two quick goals
at 2:22 and 2:02 to take the final score
to 10-7 Waterloo. The final two goals were
scored by Steve Kuti (assisted by Boyd,
and Boyd (unassisted).
Scoring for the Knights were Nick Cardillo
(2g), Evan Gallina (2g-1a), Mark Hanna (2g-1a),
Jeff MacDonald (1g), and Jay Haseley (1a).
Goalie Patrick Maguire played the entire
game and made 13 saves for a 57% day. The
Knights drop to 4-5.
Scoring for the Indians were Winston Boyd
(4g-2a), Josh Mateo (2g-1a), Mike Ruiz (2g),
Steve Kuti (1g), and Nelson Boyd (1g). Two
goalie split time for Waterloo, Mark Nearpass
who played in the first quarter and made
1 save, and Andy Riegel who played the remainder
of the game and accumulated 8 saves for
a 62% day. The Indians are now 7-3.
It
was Penn Yan over Shenendehowa
of Section 2 by a score of 10-2. Junior
goalie RJ Wickham (7s) held the the Plainsmen
scoreless in the first three quarters and
was replaced in the fourth quarter by Adam
Galusha (1s). Shenendehowa, from the eastern
part of the state is a Class A team who
lost in the semi finals of the NYS tournament
in 2004 and now drops to 3-5 this year.
Scoring for Penn Yan were Steven Carlson
(3g-2a), Dan Mesler (2g-2q), Matt Osgood
(2g-1a), Jon Folts (1g), Dan wolfe (1g-1a),
Ryan Cook (1g) and Dan McGuffie and Chris
Carlson with one assist each. Penn Yan improves
to 8-1.
It
was very wet for Geneva's game with Cicero-North
Syracuse (Section 3) and it took
overtime for CNS to win 11-10. At the end
of the first quarter is the game was tied
at three and it was continued to be tied
until the Northstars scored two man up goals
toward the end of the half.
Each team scored a goal in the third quarter.
The Panthers came back strong in the last
quarter and tied the game and sending it
into overtime. Although it appeared that
Geneva scored first in overtime, the goal
was disallowed and with about one minute
left the the overtime period CNS scored
the game winner.
Scoring for Geneva were Kyle Boncaro (3-1),
John Manion (1-2), RJ Gringeri (2-1), John
Warner (1g-1a) while Jimmy Warner, Tyler
Travis, Willy Rago and Elliot Heaton each
added one goal. Adam Schutz had 11 saves
for the Panthers (4-4).
Scoring for CNS were Nick Blumer
(5g-1a), Mike Brodhead (2g-1a), Jeff Gilbert
(1-2), Jim Haney (1g) and Nick Lococo (3g-3a).
Jamie Praino had 11 saves for the Northstars
who improve to 8-1,
with the only loss to West Genesee. Previous
wins this season include Pittsford, Liverpool,
Henninger and Corcoran.
It
was a wet and muddy today in Brighton
where the Barons took on the visiting Newark
Reds. Brighton got off to a great start
scoring the first three goals with Colin
Hickey scoring twice and Colin Davis scoring
once. Newark answered back with a score
from Alex Quku with 5:36 left in the first
quarter. Brighton continued their scoring
with goals by Ryan Conti and Colin
Davis. The first quarter ended with a score
of 5-1 for Brighton.
The second quarter saw goals by four
different players. Colin Davis and
Robbie Asselin scored for Brighton while
Alex Quku and Colin Johnson scored
for Newark. The score after two quarters
of play was Brighton 7 Newark 3.
The Third quarter saw three goals for Brighton
and two for Newark taking the
score to 10-5 for Brighton.
Brighton pulled away in the fourth quarter
with goals from Conti and Josh Uline making
the final score Brighton 12 Newark 5.
Colin Davis led Brighton with 3g-4a. Colin
Hickey finished with 3g-3a. Ryan Conti added
a pair of goals and an assist. Robbie Asselin
had 1g-2a. Kyle Warren netted 1 goal and
1 assist and Jake Anderson and Josh Uline
each had a goal for the Barons.
Scoring for Newark was Alex Quku 2g and
Colin Johnson, Dan Mizro, and Adam Galding
each scoring a goal. Nate Johnson added
an assist.
Brighton improves its record to 5-3 on the
season while Newark drops to 3-4. No
report from Newark.
Schroeder
was the 12-3 victor over visiting
Hamburg (Section 6). The Warriors took an
8-0 first quarter lead and led 10-1 at the
half. The Schroeder defense dominated the
game and allowed only five shots on goal
through 3 quarters of the game.
Mike Tota scored 3g, Chris
Ferry scored 2g and Grant Catalino added
1g-3a for the Warriors.
Schroeder improves to 6-1. Hamburg drops
to 1-5 under new Head Coach Jerry Severino.
On
a cold wet Saturday Night at Aquinas, Thomas
came ready to play and in the end were the
12-2 winner. The Titans scored the first
ten goals of the first half and
the Titans defense limited the Little Irish
to only a few scoring opportunities and
the offense took advantage of some transition
opportunities to keep the Titans on a six
game win streak.
Scoring for the Titans were Dom Scalzo
(2g-3a), Brendan Rothfuss (4g), Kevin Kemp
(1g-2a), Remington Fox (2g), Pat Maloney
(1g), Kurt DetWiller (1g), Max Gurowski (1g-1a)
and Dan Hinderland (1a). Leading the way
at the face off was Pat Maloney who won
nine out of 11. Jake Zieglar recorded six
ground balls, along with Jordan Tracey and
Remington Fox. Kevin Ryan recorded two saves
for Thomas (6-1).
Scoring for Aquinas were Pat King
(2g), Grant Corsaro (1a) and Marc Brondon
(1a).
Irondequoit
was the 11-7 winner against Ithaca of Section
4. Conditions were cold and wet as Irondequoit
opened up an 8-1 lead in the second period
with Greg Wright, Andrew Hart and Mickey
Haight leading the way. Hart assisted on
3 of the 8 goals and both Greg and Mickey
chipping in with two goals.
Ithaca recovered by the end of the 3rd perion
when the score was 9-7. Peter Mulchy a midfielder
for Ithaca scored four of those goals and
Sky Torgenson contributing two goals.
Irondequoit shored up the defense and finished
with two goals in the 4th quarter to finish
with the 11-7 win.
Said Head Coach John Van Etten: "I
am pleased that we were able to get back
on the winning track , that all but one
of the goals were assisted and we were able
to win the ground ball war."
