The Quakers returned with another goal by Bartlett with just 0:03 left in the half and OP went into the break up 6-4.

Goalie play became a factor in the third quarter as Canandaigua scored three goals on four shots. OP scored three goals, but took eight shots, of which junior goalie Dan Serafine made four critical saves. Bartlett started where he left off, scoring an unassisted goal at 9:39. Mulheron returned with an unassisted goal at 8:49. Sophomore middie Charlie Sauter brought the Braves within one with his unassisted goal just 0:29 seconds later, bringing the hundreds of CA fans to their feet. Orchard Parks wins another Western Regional title and will advance to play the Central Region Champions from West Genesee at 3:30 on Thursday at Aquinas. The winner will play for the State title on Saturday at Cornell.

The later game at Aquinas was between Honeoye Falls-Lima from Section Five and Amherst from Section Six for the Class B Regional Championship. Amherst, who was the only Buffalo area team to beat Orchard Park this year, came into the game at 17-4 having won their out bracket game against Saranac Lake of Section Ten on Saturday. The Cougars, playing a very defensive game won 6-5 and in their second year as a Varsity team will advance to the final four on Saturday.

Amherst scored the first goal of the game at 11:12 when sophomore middie Dan Lawson scored on an assist from senior attackman Justin Pratt. Less than two minutes later senior attackman Jeff Price scored with an assist from Connor Burgasser to tie the game at one. John Allen scored for the Tigers at 3:48 after receiving a feed from Corey Rich and Amherst led at the end of the first quarter, 2-1.

The second quarter was nearly all defense as the Cougars shutout the Tigers while scoring two goals of their own. The first, at 2:17 was by David Uzialko with an assist from Mike Cintineo and the second was at 0:34 by Cintineo (unassisted). The half ended with HF-L up 3-2.

HF-L scored their only goal of the third quarter at 9:15 when Cintineo scored on a feed from Zane Witzel. After more defense and a great deal of transition play, the Tigers saw an unassisted goal by Kyle Burton at 4:51 and scored the tying goal at 0:45 when Allen dodged for an unassisted goal for Amherst. The third quarter ended with Amherst up 4-3.

The Tigers took the last quarter lead at 6:25 when Eric Herzig scored their last goal of the season (unassisted). At 3:22, Uzialko tied the game at five on a feed from Burgasser. Cintineo scored the game winner (unassisted) at 1:26 for the Cougars who move to 18-2, having lost only to Webster Schroeder during the mid season and to Penn Yan in the B/C Championship. That loss to the Mustangs last Friday may have been a factor in this game, as the Cougars were anxious to make up the 5-2 loss after winning the "B side" of the mixed tournament.

In the end, the game was decided by game basics. Amherst had numerous shots but missed the goal at critcal times. Man up opportunities were missed, and in a championship game, these factors can shift the balance of a close game.

Scoring for HF-L were Cintineo (2g-1a), Uzialko (2g), Price (1g), Burgasser (2a) and Witzel (1a).

Amherst saw scoring from Allen (2g), Lawson (1g), Erzig (1g), Burton (1g), Rich (1a), and Pratt (1a).

HF-L will advance to the semi finals at Aquinas on Thursday, where they will play Jamesville DeWitt from Section Three at 5:30. JD won their Central Region Championship by beating Corning East (Section4) 11-10 on Thursday.

As a result of Canton's 14-2 win over Salamanca of Section Six, the Mustangs from Penn Yan traveled "half-way" to Liverpool High School (Syracuse) to beat the Golden Bears 12-8 in a game that looked like it was played by two different Penn Yan teams.

Canton scored the first goal of the game in the first minute, but Penn Yan returned with the next eight in a row including three goals by Jon Van Houten, two by Dan Mesler and two by Steven Carlson who scored his both 41 second apart. The half ended with Penn Yan up 8-1.

The third quarter saw an entirely different story as Canton came back with seven goals while holding the Mustangs to 1 until late in the quarter. With 0:08 left in the third, Mark Kratochvil scored on a feed from Carlson. On the faceoff, Kyle Jensen scored on a feed from Van Houten just as time expired for an 11-8 Mustang lead.

The quick goals energized Penn Yan who then shut out Canton for the rest of the game while getting one more goal from Carlson to win 12-8.

“The two goals at the end of the third quarter were huge,” Penn Yan coach Brian Hobart told the Finger Lakes Times. “Those were effort goals, just beating their man down the field and cutting to the goal. Our two senior captains picked us up, and the defense did a nice job of pulling it together in the fourth quarter.”

Scoring for Penn Yan were Van Houten (3g-2a), Carlson (3g-2a), Mesler (3g) while Manley, Kratochvil and Jensen each added 1g. RJ Wickham had 10 saves for the Mustangs who will face Lafayette (Section Three) on Thursday at Aquinas at 8:00.

Lafayette is one of the few NYS teams still undefeated (22-0). They won their Central Region Championship with a 16-8 win over Chenango Forks of Section Four.
