Saturday: Midlakes wins and More |
May 7, 2005 - It's been a long first varsity season for Midlakes, but
today was a day for celebration as the Eagles won a 7-6
overtime victory over visiting Bath. In other contests,
McQuaid Jesuit, Thomas and Schroeder were all winners.
Bath scored 3 goals in the last 3:20 of the game to force
Midlakes overtime. The last goal came
with 0:47 in regulation. Midlakes midfielder Nate Stevens
scored a man up goal just 29 seconds into overtime to
win their first varsity game.
Scoring for Midlakes were Stevens (3g), John Biggs (2g),
Dom Valerio (1g-2a), Chris Underwood (1g) and Jeremy Denisi
(1a). Brandan Hennessy made 18 saves for the Eagles (1-12).
Scoring for Bath were Jeremy Sutfin (3g), Ryan Finney
(1g-1a), McKenzie Durham (1g-1a), Richie Zajac (1g), Chris
Osborne (2a) and Alex Durham (1a). Jeremiah Wilder had
10 saves for the Rams (4-10).
In
their first game, Aquinas was the 5-4 winner and so fans
for both teams expected a good, close game. Such was not
the case
however, as McQuaid Jesuit took a 6-1 half time
lead and scored six goals in the third to finished with
a 13-5 win at home. The Little Irish had trouble clearing
throughout the game and the McQuaid Jesuit defense was solid
and saw numerous take aways from Alex Caton and Christian
Cavanaugh. Knight goalie Pat Maguire came up with dramatic
saves, fending off a number of powerful shots from Pat
King and David Schmandt.
The Knights scored the only two goals in the first quarter
as Evan Gallina and Kevin Dacey scored unassisted goals.
In the second quarter Gallina scored at 8:36 on a feed
from Marty Farchione. Aquinas then scored their only goal
of the half when Pat King scored (unassisted) at 6:58.
About a minute later Scott Rubino scored an unassisted
goal for McQuaid Jesuit and his brother Tyler scored an unassisted
goal at 3:38. The last goal of the half was scored by
Mark Hanna on a feed from Scott Rubino and the half ended
with the knights in command at 6-1.
After the half time break, Aquinas scored first on an
unassisted goal by Richie Zajac at 6:58. The Knights answered
with five goals in a row. The first goal was credited
to Tyler Rubio ("In-Home") when Aquinas goalie
Jason LaShomb lost control of the ball and let it fall
into the net. That was followed by Andrew Foster (from
Farchione), Farchione (unassisted), Hanna (from Farchione)
and Farchione alone at 3:10. David Schmandt scored for
Aquinas with 0:28 left in the third, but Hanna responded
on the following faceoff with an assist from Scott Rubino.
The quarter ended with McQuaid Jesuit up 12-3.
The last quarter saw a great deal of transition and few
goals. McQuaid Jesuit's single goal came at 4:07 when Tyler Rubino
picked up a ground ball and scored. Aquinas had unassisted
goals from Pat Eyre at 3:43 and Royce Bleier at 0:21.
McQuaid Jesuit improves to 7-8 (4-1 in GRALL competition) and
Aquinas drops to 9-7 (also 4-1 in GRALL).
It was Webster Thomas over Gates Chili,
11-8 in Webster on Saturday
afternoon. Thomas took an early lead ending the first
quarter up 4-1 and the half at 6-3. The Spartans came
within one goal in the last quarter before the Titans
pulled ahead for good.
Scoring for the Titans were Brendan Rothfuss (3g-1a),
Kevin Kemp (1g-1a), defensemen Mark Schuber (1g-1a), Kurt
DetWiller (2g), Max Gurowski (2a), Dom Scalzo (1g-2a) and
Alan Luwish (1g-1a). Scoring his first varsity goal was
sophomore middie Nick Berkompas. Sophomore goalie Alex
Mosher recorded 12 saves for the Titans (5-7).
Scoring for the Spartans were Dave Street (4g-3a), Tom
Sudek (1g-1a), Andy Hilton (1g), Tom Elkins (1g) and Andy
McEntee (1g). Dave Bellaivia recorded 12 saves for Gates
(2-11).
Webster
Schroeder took a 4-1 first quarter lead
and went into halftime up 6-3 before beating host Pittsford
14-6.
The Warriors scored first with a goal by Jay Willmes (assisted
by Grant Catalino) at 8:53. Less than a minute later Tom
Costanza scored an unassisted
goal in man up. Pittsford's Dylan Bittlingmaier scored
for Pittsford at 3:10 but Schroeder came back with unassisted
goals by Mike Catalino and then Grant Catalino in man
up at 0:37. The quarter ended with the Warriors up 4-1.
The second quarter started out slowly with the ball in
transition for the first six minutes. Grant Catalino scored
at 5:59 and Willmes scored 34 seconds later with a feed
from Chris Ferry. The Panthers came back with the last
two goals of the half . Bittlingmaier scored on a feed
from Jake Boyce at 3:32 and Justin Rand scored a man up
goal (also assisted by Boyce) at 2:42. The half ended
with Webster up 6-3.
Pittsford started the second half with two goals, the
first by Boyce (assisted by Doug Johnson) and the second
at 11:31 by Bittlingmaier (unassisted) which took the
Panthers to 5-6 which was as close as
they would get. Schroeder went on a five goal streak starting
at 7:08 with an unassisted goal by Tom Costanza, followed
by a score by Grant Catalino (from his Tom Costanza) at
5:44. Ferry scored on a feed from Jason Cirulli at 4:01
and Tom Costanza finished the third quarter with two unassisted
goals. The Warriors took an 11-5 lead.
In the last quarter Andy Winslow scored for Webster at
7:46 to give the Warriors a 12-5 lead. Grant Catalino
added a goal at 2:15 and Pittsford scored their last goal
at 1:33 when Fred Morse scored his unassisted goal. Schroeder
scored their last goal in man up when Joe Didia scored
on a feed from Ferry with 0:15 left in the game.
Pittsford goalie Chris Jacobs made 11 saves for the Panthers
(4-6). Webster Schroeder goalie Dennis Costanza had 8
saves for the Warriors (7-6).
Senior attackmen Tim Spillett (6g) and Dave Osier (3g-5a)
produced 14 of 22 points as the number one ranked NYS
Class A team, West Genesee, beat visiting
Penn Yan 13-7. West Genny took a 4-0 first quarter lead
with Osier scoring three and assisted on the fourth. The
Cats held a 6-3 halftime lead and then scored three more
in the third. Both teams scored four goals in the last
quarter.
Scoring for the Wildcats were Tim Spillett (6g), Dave
Osier (3g-5a), Brian Griffin (1g-1a), Jeff Ryan (2a) and
Tim Griffin (1g). Also scoring were Mark Cometti (1g),
Kevin Courtney (1g) and Rob Chamberlain (1a).
Scoring for Penn Yan were Jon Van Houten (3g-1a), Dan
Mesler (2g-1a) and Dan McGuffie (2g). RJ Wickham had 14
saves for the Mustangs (9-5).
According to the Sunday Finger Lakes Times it
was Geneva over Mynderse 16-3 on Saturday.
The article states that Mike Toner led the effort with
3g-3a, while Chris Toner added 3g-2a and Carson Poole
had 3g for Geneva. Also scoring were John Manion (2g-2a),
John Warner (2g-1a), Matt Warner (1g-2a) and Adam Stewart
(1g-1a). Geneva improves to 8-6.
Sean McGrimley scored 2g for The Blue Devils (5-8). There
were no reports from Geneva or Mynderse.
In another report, the Sunday Finger Lakes Times
reported that Waterloo beat visiting
Whitney Point (Section 4) with a score of 12-7. T.J. Radka
led the effort for the Indians with 4g while Jason Johnson
added 2g-1a and Matt Kaiser scored once and assisted on
three others. Ten different players scored for Waterloo
(10-6). There was no report from
