Tuesday: Sunny Vacation |
April 19, 2005 - It is vacation week in Section Five and numerous non-league
and make up games have been scheduled throughout the week.
The morning's first game was at 11:00 as Webster
Thomas hosted Spencerport and won a mostly
close fought contest 11-7. Spencerport scored the first
goal at 10:08 as sophomore attackman Pat Decker scored
an unassisted goal in man up. It would be the only time
the Rangers would be up during the game, as the Titans
came back with four goals before the quarter ended. Junior
attackman Kevin Kemp scored first at 8:35 after picking
up the ground ball near the crease. Sophomore attackman
Dom Scalzo scored in man up at 7:01 on a feed from Brendon
Rothfuss. Rothfuss scored the next two with assists from
Scalzo and Kemp and the quarter ended with Webster up
4-1.
The second quarter saw more even play, with each team
scoring three goals. Thomas scored first, in man up, as
junior middie Kurt DetWiller scored on an assist from Kemp.
Spencerport returned with two unassisted goals by junior
attackman Rob Stojanov. Titian senior middie Alan Liwush

Max Berkompas. The Rangers then saw Decker score (unassisted)
at 0:48. With 0:14 left Webster scored another by Liwush
and the half ended with Thomas up 7-4.
A slow third quarter saw one
goal each as Spencerport added an unassisted goal by junior
middie Dave Pels at 6:36 and Webster responded with an
unassisted goal by DetWiller at 2:32.
Junior midfielder Stephen DiFulvio scored in manup for
Spencerport at 10:08 with an assist by Stojanov and 0;47
seconds later the Titans saw the first of Scalzo's three
in a row, the first unassisted at 9:30. Scalzo scored
again at 7:19 on the assist by Rothfuss. The Ranger's
scored what would be their last goal at 4:02 when Decker
hit (unassisted). Scalzo finished the game with another
unassisted goal at 1:56.
On the defensive end of the field, Thomas saw numerous
takes from senior long stick Matt Kemp who often cleared
the ball by himself. Junior goalie Steven Hondorf and
sophomore goalie Michael Mosher combined for 9 saves for
The Titans (2-4).
Spencerport junior goalie Ryan Konko had 12 saves and
long stick defenseman Cameron Sformo had a good day on
defense and had 6 GB's for the Rangers (4-3). No
report from Thomas.
It's always a big game when Canandaigua
and Fairport meet. Tuesday's game, at Canandaigua's Evans
Field, was an exciting game, with explosive scoring by
both teams but in the end it would be the defense that
created the 10-5 win for the Braves.
In the first quarter Canandaigua scored first as senior
middie Dan Groot scored the first of his three in a row
at the 9:02 mark. Fairport returned at 5:24 when junior
middie Ryan Lowe score
on a feed from senior middie Chris Lindner. Groot scored
again at 3:41 and again at 2:30 (assisted by Chris Mulheron)
and the quarter ended with CA up 3-1.
The second quarter saw a great deal of effort, with few
goals as the defense for both teams held the offense away
from the goal. Fairport continued to struggle to clear
the ball as the CA defensive middies pressed hard and
the riding team forced turnovers. Canandaigua scored the
first two goals; the first at 8:29 as Mulheron scored
on a pass from Groot and the second by sophomore middie
Jeremy Brown assisted by Groot. With 0:04 left in the
half, Fairport's junior attackman Pat Reilly intercepted
a clearing pass and scored. The half ended with Canandaigua
up 5-2, Dan Groot having been in on all five CA goals.
The third quarter saw the scoring go back
and forth, with the Braves defense forcing the Raiders
to take outside shots. Fairport scored first, at 9:58
as sophomore middie Tom Rynn scored (unassisted). The
Raiders scored again at 7:46 when junior attackman Peter
Burkhardtt scored on a pass from Reilly. The Braves scored
25 seconds later, slowing the Fairport "come back"
when senior midfielder Tyler Emery scored with an assist
from Mulheron. Less than a minute later the Raiders scored
what would be their last goal when Lindner picked up a
ground ball in front of the crease and popped it past
junior goalie Dan Serafine. Not to be out done, CA returned
at 5:35 with an unassisted main up goal scored by Brown
after he picked up a ground ball in front of the
goal. Senior midfielder Brian Hadsell scored the final
goal of the quarter at 1:37 on a feed from Mulheron and
the third quarter ended with the Braves in the lead, 8-5.
The Canandaigua defense came on strong in the last quarter,
senior Mike Serron had a couple of take aways and held
Reilly to 1g-1a. Seniors Ed Walsh and Jay Woodworth were
able to keep Mike Danylyshyn off the Fairport scorebook
and senior Ryan Cunningham held Rynn to 1g in the game.
Fairport was held scoreless in the last quarter, but,
through the efforts of their midfield, had a good amount
of ball time. CA saw last quarter goals from Hadsell and
senior attackman Aaron Manzer on an assist from Hadsell
in man up. Serafine ended the game with 8 saves. Canandaigua
continues their undefeated run at 7-0 while Fairport drops
to 5-3. No reports from Canandaigua
or Fairport.
