Saturday: Thanks for Turf ! |
March 26, 2005 - Because of the hospitality
of Irondequoit High School and Nazareth College, seven games
were played on synthetic turf today that probably would not
have been played on home field grass. As a result more than
350 players and their fans enjoyed a cold but clear and sunny
day with a number of great opening day efforts.
The first game of the day was at Irondequoit at 9:00 am as
the Barons from Brighton started up looking
like they finished last year, with a 12-5 win over Eastridge.
Both teams were tentative at the start of the game with Brighton
scoring the only goal of the quarter at 8:47
with and assisted goal by senior attackman, Mike Ryerson.
Eastridge senior attackman, Brody Mapes tied the score with
a goal at 6:34 with an assist from Brain Sutton. Brighton
returned with two more goals (junior attackman Colin Davis
and senior attackman James Ryan, both unassisted) to end the
hal with the Barons up 3-1.
Brighton opened it up in the second half, scoring four goals
in the third quarter and five more in the last quarter, while
holding the Lancers to four.
Senior goalie, Mike Matteo made numerous dramatic saves for
Eastridge including three point blank from the crease. He
finished the game with 24 saves. Clearing, however, was a
major problem for the Lancers and although Matteo tried numerous
teammates, many had difficulty controlling the pass and at
least three goals resulted from Brighton rides.
Both Ryerson and Ryan ended the game for Brighton with 4g-1a
each. Davis finished with 3g, junior attackman Colin Hickey
with 1g and junior middie, Robie Asselin with 3 assists. Senior
goalie Mike Katz recorded 12 saves for the Barons (1-0).
For Eastridge (0-1), senior attackman Nick Savine collected
2g, as did junior middie Sean Sawyer, while Mapes added 1g
and senior attackman Brian Sutton finished with an assist.
No report from Eastridge.
The second game of the day was the home opener for Irondequoit,
who fell to Fairport in an 8-7 game that went right down
to the last minute.
Fairport took an early control of the game, out scoring
the Eagles 6-2 in the first half with two goals from sophomore
middie Tom Rynn and single goals by junior attackmen Pat

goals, scored in the first quarter, were from sophomore
middie Kevin Coholan (assisted by senior middie Sean Doyle)
and junior middie Jake Schindler (assisted by junior attackman
Joe Parker).
After the break, Fairport went right to work scoring at
11:19 with a goal by Reilly assisted by sophomore middie
James Danylyshyn (1g-3a). The Eagles scored the next five
as the large home town crowd were brought to their feet.

by Schindler at 8:06. Junior attackman, Derek Pino scored
at 3:20 assisted by senior midfielder Cory Bottiglier who
scored the next goals by himself at 0:59. After the next
face off Doyle scored an unassisted man up goal with a blazing
side arm shot from the front of the cage to tie the game
at 7 and end the quarter.
Less than two minutes into the last quarter, after a number
of blocked shots by the Raiders, Danylyshyn picked up a
ground ball right on the crease and scored what would be
the winning goal for Fairport. The last 10 minutes saw many
Irondequoit opportunities but the Raider defense held tight.
Fairport goalie recorded 7 saves. No
report from Irondequoit.

goals against Pittsford as cruised to a 13-3 win behind
the efforts for senior attackman Tom Costanza (5g-2a) and
