Penn Yan needed overtime for their trip to the Championships, and Victor has periods of running time in their win over Corning. Webster Thomas had a close first half with Jamesville-DeWitt, but finished their exciting season at CN-S today.
The newly updated tournament brackets are available Class A, Class B and Class C.
-- After a broken Cazenovia clear, Austin Fingar moved the ball up field in transition and at the left crease found senior attackman Craig Gerhardt who then sent the ball cross-crease to senior Tate Stewart who, in overtime, scored his first of the game and gave the Mustangs a trip to the Championships in Middletown.
It was most certainly a game of two halves, as the Mustangs dominated in the first half, leading by as much as six goals and entering the halftime break up 8-3. Cazenovia, who had won the last three years in the same semifinal game against the Mustangs would not giving up and returned with five out of six goals in the third quarter and then two more at the start of the fourth quarter to take a 10-9 lead with just over seven minutes left in the game. With just over two minutes left in regulation Penn Yan got the ball in their offensive end and Coach Brian Hobart called a time out. Shortly thereafter Sean Emerson scored on a nice pass from Austin Fingar to tie the game at 10-10. On the ensuing face off the Lakers got possession and Coach Jim Longo called a time out. The Lakers started with the ball, but the Mustangs took it away and then down field hitting a pipe, just as time ran out.
Exciting performances came from a number of Mustangs including Austin Fingar (3g-2a) who, in the first half of the game set the tone winning many face offs. Craig Gerhardt (3g-2a) and Sean Emerson gave Penn Yan multiple dimensions and when one player was covered hard by the very competent Red Ram defense another took up the banner. Gage Ponsetti had a number of key one-on-one saves and ended the day with twelve saves (55%).
The Mustangs will play Cold Spring Harbor on Saturday at Middletown High School at 1:30 pm. The Seahawks defeated Pleasantville 12-10 and are currently 17-1.

-- There is not much to say about the Victor Blue Devil win tonight as they cruised past Corning in the semifinal Class A game at Bragman Stadium (CN-S High School). Victor face off specialist won his first eleven face offs in the first half (and finished with 17 of 18) to give the Blue Devils almost exclusive ball time. With a very patient opening offense the players moved the ball from every direction, while scoring four unanswered goals in the first quarter and ending the half up 9-1.
Coach Jim Andre started making substitutions in the second half and after the game went into running time, many more players got field experience. Starting goalie, Chayse Ierlan, who made some exciting one-on-one stops recorded nine saves while allowing only one goal in his three quarter performance.
Next up for the Blue Devils is another shot at a New York State Championship. Coach Andre is fond of saying that the team is not "defending their title" from last year because that was in Class B and this year they are playing in Class A. In any event, Victor has a record of 21-0 this season and are on a 43 game winning streak with their last loss in 2014 (against Jamesville-Dewitt in the NYS semifinal game). On Saturday they will be playing Ward Melville who defeated Lakeland/Panas 16-6 tonight. The Patriots are currently 18-6. Game time in Middletown is 4:00 pm.
[ Note: due to the lateness of the game, player stats will be uploaded on Thursday. ]

-- The Red Rams started off with the first three goals against Webster Thomas, but the Titans came back with the next three goals to tie the game early in the second quarter. Travis Ford (4-2) scored with 3:55 left in the half to give Thomas their first lead of the game (5-4). The Red Rams used the last three minutes of the half to scored two goals and go to the break, up 6-5.
J-D scored the first two goals in the third, extending their lead to three and then Travis Ford scored the only Thomas goal of the quarter before J-D came back with three more including three from Grayson Burns who ended the game with five. Although the Red Rams scored the first goal of the last quarter, Thomas returned with three in a row taking the score to 9-12. Multiple penalties gave much of the end of the game ball time to the Red Rams who scored one more in man up.
The Ford brothers were noteworthy in the game with senior Travis recording 4g-2a and his sophomore brother Trevor adding g3-1a. Senior attackman Pierce Currie had 2g. Sophomore goalie Matt Yonko, who was moved up from the JV earlier in the season when his brother, Ben was injured has a stellar season with the Varsity and made some superb saves in the biggest game of his life thus far. Recording nine saves against a very competent Jamesville-DeWitt offense.
Jamesville-DeWitt will appear for the fifth time in six years to the Championship game in Middletown at 11:00 am on Saturday.
