All three Section Five teams won their Western Regional games today and will advance to the semi final round in Syracuse (CNS) on Wednesday. Webster Thomas ended Hamburg`s undefeated season with a 12-10 win. Penn Yan had a slow start but took Akron to running time at one point in the second half as they won 17-6 and Victor also had a slow start but defeated Orchard Park 17-7.

The newly updated tournament brackets are available Class A, Class B and Class C.

--  SPORTSFIVE REPORT: The Penn Yan Mustangs scored the first goal and never lost the lead as they defeated the Akron Tigers 17-6 in the Western Regionals in Buffalo. Penn Yan led 4-1 after the first quarter and then scored seven more to enter the half-time break up 11-3. Slowing the pace a bit in the third they led 14-5 before finishing the game at 17-6.

Austin Fingar (4g-8a) and Sean Emerson (6g-2a) combined for most of the Mustang offense although eight players made the offensive book for Penn Yan. Although the offense received top billing the Penn Yan defense was equally productive. Key defensive assignments by senior defenseman Tanner Irwin and sophomore defenseman Coty Bailey were of particular note as they stifled offensive attacks, picked up key ground balls and helped move the ball down field during clears. After a slow start, in fact, the Mustangs were relentless on loose ground balls, often chasing them down from long distances.

In the cage, senior Gage Ponsetti made some dramatic saves and ended the game with 12s/6ga.

The Mustangs move on to the semifinal round in Syracuse at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. They will be playing Cazenovia on Wednesday at 5:30. It will be the fourth meeting of the two teams in the semifinals and Cazenovia has won close games in each of the previous three meetings.

--  SPORTSFIVE REPORT: Webster Thomas played a closed game with the previously undefeated Hamburg Bulldogs and came out on top with a 12-10 scored at All High Stadium in Buffalo (Section VI).

Senior midfielder Evan Hollfelder, who has been instrumental in the Bulldog success this season, scored the first of his 6g-3a at 10:30 on a drive from the front. The "big man" from Webster Thomas, Travis Ford, tied the game two minutes later. The game continued to go back and forth with neither team taking more than a one goal lead. The quarter finished with a tie at 3-3.

Hollfelder scored again to start the second quarter and Scott Ramaeker added another for the Bulldogs before Pierce Currie received a feed from Trevor Ford and Brad Smith scored on a loose ball on the crease to tie the game at 5-5. Hollfelder scored again and Currie (assisted by Travis Ford) tied the game at the half at 6-6.

At the top pf the third quarter the game was tied again at 7-7 after which Travis Ford gave the Titans a lead at 8-7 and they never lost the lead again. At the end of the third quarter Thomas was up 10-7 and early in the last quarter the Bulldogs took scored two goals to get close at 10-9, but goals by Nick Mabe and Travis Ford gave the Titans a 12-9 lead. Hamburg scored a man up goal to end the game at 12-10.

Sophomore goalie Matt Yonko had a good day in the cage for the Titans, making numerous "big saves" at important times. He ended the game with 13 saves (57%). In the cage for Hamburg was sophomore backup goalie, Mason Lavelle who was filling in for starter Seth Graber, who was sick, but on the bench with his teammates.

Senior midfielder Travis Ford was out to make a statement, controlling the ball and the tempo for the Titans. Figuring in on nine of the twelve goals he ended the game with 6g-3a.

Next up for Thomas is the final four where they will play Jamesville-DeWitt (Section III) at Cicero-North Syracuse High School at 3:30 on Wednesday.

Victor 17 - Orchard Park 7

--  SPORTSFIVE REPORT: It was the second meeting of the Victor Blue Devils and the Orchard Park Quakers this year and the result was the same as the Blue Devils defeated the powerful Section VI Class A Quakers 17-7 in the Western Regionals in Buffalo today. The first game (on April 30th) saw Victor winning 19-5.

Not unlike their game with Pittsford in the Section Five Championships, Victor started out slowly. The Quakers outscored them 2-1 in the first quarter but the Blue Devils woke up in the second, scoring six unanswered goals and ending the half up 8-2. Victor added three more in the third and then six more unanswered goals in the last quarter before ending up with the 17-7 win.

Key to the win was the expected, but sterling effort of senior face off specialist T.D. Ierlan who won 19 of 21 face offs for Victor. The consistent ball time on their offensive end of the field limited shots by Orchard Park, but sophomore goalie, Chayse Ierlan made a number of classy saves and ended his day with 9s/5ga.

Victor, who have been undefeated since 2014, will move on to the NYS semifinal round in Syracuse (Cicero-North Syracuse High School) and will play Corning (Section IV) who defeated Jamesville-DeWitt (Section III) in overtime toady. The game will be played on Wednesday at 8:00 pm.
