-- NOTES: On the bus trip from Victor to Vestal the boys watched the movie "Miracle on Ice", the fact-based story of the U.S. Olympic hockey team that beat the Soviets in the 1980 Lake Placid games. The hockey win was far less probable than what the Victor Boys have done all year. In the last game of the 2015 scholastic season, the Blue Devils won their first New York State Championship when they defeated Manhasset of Section 8 with the score of 17-8.
Victor entered the game as the only undefeated team in New York State. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead before the Indians scored their first goal at 10:03 in the second quarter. After Manhasset switched from a man-to-man defense to a split zone, the Blue Devil onslaught was slowed down. The Indians scored four in a row taking the score to 8-4, but a four goal differential was as close as Manhasset got, even though they were relentless on ground balls and continued their aggressive "on ball" defense.
Victor's offense was stellar, with many interior feeds and several multi-pass goals. Thirteen of their eighteen goals were assisted. Manhasset had two assisted goals, and six different players shared the goals.
As expected, one key to the win was the performance of the Victor face off unit who with T.D. Ierlan at the helm won 20 of 28 draws for the Blue Devils. In many cases it was the wing players that picked up ground balls that were hotly contested by the Indians. A not so expected key, however was the dramatic play of the Victor defense in front of freshman goaltender Chayse Ierlan who was credited with five saves. The long sticks consistently turned back drives by Manhasset whose leading scorer, Tyler Dunn, was held to two unassisted goals.
Junior midfielder Dan Barrow was named the game`s Most Valuable Player after scoring six goals. Junior midfielder Jamie Trimboli led the team in points with 4g-4a.
Victor becomes the third Section Five team to win a New York State Championship. Penn Yan won the Class C title in 2001 when they defeated Manhasset 9-5 (playing in Class C that year), and Canandaigua won a Class B Championship in 2009 when they beat Niskayuna 5-2.
Interestingly, both Niskayuna and Manhasset played in Championship games today. Nisky defeated West Genesee 13-10 in the Class A Championship. Cold Spring Harbor defeated Cazenovia 9-8 in the Class C game.
