Thursday: C-C over CA, Thomas Edges Penn Yan

  In a couple of exciting match ups, Thomas used a strong second half to secure an 8-7 win over the visiting Mustangs and Churchville-Chili outscored Canandaigua 2-0 in the second quarter as part of their 11-8 win. Pittsford and Rush-Henrietta earned rare shutouts in their games today. Other winners were Wayne, Thunder, Geneva, Gananda, Spencerport, Gates Chili, Victor and McQuaid Jesuit.

Three teams in the Section remain undefeated: Pittsford (7-0), Victor (6-0) and Churchville-Chili (4-0).

--  Notes In a back and forth game, Gates-Chili scored five unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter and secure their 10-7 win over Brockport. The Spartans had a strong opening and closing to the contest with the Blue Devils playing strong in in the middle quarters. The game finished with eighteen penalties and five goals scored during man-up.

GC scored four of the first five goals with Nicholas Ehmann, Brett Jacobs (2) and Brett Kirkpatrick scoring. Quinton Caleb scored the opening goal for Brockport. The Spartans led 4-1 with 11:32 remaining in the second quarter. They did not score again for 26:34 until the fourth quarter stretch. Brockport scored four straight goals with two goals from Tyler Stiefel and one from Caleb and Austin Myers.

--  Notes Thomas scored five unanswered goals spanning the second and third quarters to defeat Penn Yan 8-7. The Titans and Mustangs have played six times in the last five years and with the Thomas win, the series is now tied 3-3. Penn Yan was held scoreless for 19:36 from late in the second quarter to early in the fourth quarter.

Penn Yan opened up the scoring with Austin Fingar scoring off an assist from Sean Emerson. Fingar finished the game with 3g-1a and Emerson finished with 1g-3a. Thomas tied the game with Kevin Hill feeing the ball to Sam Tomeno. Hill was the leading scorer for the Titans with 2g-2a. Both teams added another goal in the final 30 seconds of the first quarter with Craig Gerhardt scoring for Penn Yan and Sammy Botross-Greenlee scoring for Thomas. The score was tied 2-2 after the first quarter.

Penn Yan came out swinging in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead. Gerhardt scored during man-up (assisted by Fingar) and then Fingar scored his own goal. His goal at 5:20 was the last for Penn Yan until Fingar scored again with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter. During that time Thomas had goals from Hill (2), Travis Ford and Christian Nairy (2). Penn Yan scored three of the last four goals but it was not enough to tie the game.

In the cage for Thomas, Davis Bird finished with nine saves (56%). Midfielder Cam Isaac led his team with five ground balls and Botross-Greenlee added another four. For the Mustangs, Gage Ponsetti finished with nine saves (53%). Fingar finished the face off draw at 65% (11/17) and a team leading eight ground balls.

--  Notes Churchville-Chili remained undefeated with an 11-8 win over Canandaigua. The Saints have faced the Braves seven times in the last five years and this is only their second win. The game was a close contest with the lead changing hands four times and the game tied at 1,2,3,5 and 6. A key factor in the game was man-up opportunities. Seven of the nineteen goals were scored during man-up with seven of ten penalties being scored on. Churchville-Chili finished 3/5 and Canandaigua finished 4/5.
The first three goals of the contest were all man-up goals. Connor Hulme scored the opening goal with an assist from Ben Smith-Wilcox. Smith-Wilcox finished the game with 2g-3a to lead his team. Ninety seconds later Ryan Cosgrove scored the first of his two goals with an assist from Jacob Buck to keep the game tied. Another man-up goal and another assist from Smith-Wilcox but the Braves back on top. Devin Andrews scored his lone goal of the game. Churchville-Chili`s Jason Tebo scored back to back goals to give the Saints their first lead. The latter goal was assisted by Buck and another man-up goal. Ethan Marchitell scored the final goal of the quarter to tie the game at 3-3. The Saints were patient throughout the opening quarter and only took three shots (all of which were goals). On the other hand, Canandaigua took 10 shots to get their three goals.

The second quarter belonged to Churchville-Chili. They added two more goals to take a 5-3 lead going into halftime. Cosgrove scored his second and Cameron Shipley the first of his 3g-1a. Churchville-Chili held the Braves scoreless for 13:48. Coming out of halftime, Canandaigua made up for the stagnant second quarter by scoffing three unanswered goals and taking back the lead. Smith-Wilcox scored the first; followed by Tim Bay (man-up) and Tyelor Dingman. The Braves led by a single goal with 5:25 remaining in the third quarter. The Saints defense stepped up again and kept the Braves from scoring for another 15:23. During the fifteen minutes, Churchville-Chili added six goals to take an 11-6 lead. Scoring came from Shipley (2), Tebo (2), Joey Johnson and Austin Orengo. Canandaigua scored the final two goals with 2:03 and 0:46 remaining; however, it was not enough to close the gap.

In the cage for Churchville-Chili, Matt Cobb finished with 16 saves (67%). Midfielder Dan Bonafede led his team with four ground balls. Cobb and defenseman Tyler Phillips both added three ground balls to the count. For Canandaigua, Luke MacNeil finished with 5 saves. Face off midfielder Nick Johnson dominated the day for the Braves and finished at 80% (16/20) with only a single non-technical loss. He also led his team with seven ground balls. Midfielder Joe Como added five and Smith-Wilcox added four.
