Thursday: Sixteen Games: Some Close... Some Not

On this first "big" day of lacrosse under cloudy or rainy skies, there were sixteen games played. Livonia won their contest over Aquinas in overtime and the Thunder won their game with Gates by a single goal. Midlakes won their game with Mynderse 9-7 and Rush-Henrietta beat Hilton by a goal. The rest were not so close. Winning were Fairport, Churchville-Chili, Canandaigua, Penfield, Pal-Mac, Geneva, Gananda, McQuaid Jesuit, Batavia-Attica, Victor, Pittsford, and Spencerport.

--  Notes In a game where the score was never more than two goals apart, Greece Athena/Odyssey defeated Gates Chili 13-12. The Thunder scored the final goal with only 0:10 left in regulation. Sophomore midfielder Zack Gibaud scored his fourth goal of the game for the win. Over the past ten years, this is only the third time that Greece has defeated Gates Chili who have won twelve.

The game had seven lead changes and the score was tied eight times. Gibaud was the leading scorer for Greece with 4g-2a. Joey Fornataro finished with 4g-1a and Dylan Wiemer finished with 2g-1a. Greece used three different man-up opportunities to score including two late in the game to take their final lead. Jason Harter played the entire game in the cage and finished with nine saves.

In the cage for Gates Chili, CJ Parker finished with 11 saves (52%) and Michael Cavallaro finished with four saves (57%). Midfielder Brett Kirkpatrick finished at 59% for the draw with a team leading ten ground balls. Offensively, three Spartans finished with hat tricks (Joseph O'Hare, Austin Castre and Nicholas Ehmann). Ehmann also added an assist.

The Blue Devils kept up heavy pressure in third quarter as they took the lead twice, but could not hold on in the final quarter. The final tying goal, as well as the go ahead goal, were both scored during extra-man opportunities for Midlakes.

Nate Ramsey finished with 3g-2a for the Screaming Eagles. Jeshurun Eldridge and Chris Goodman added two goals each. In the cage for Midlakes, Kyle Wilkes recorded five saves. --  Notes Livonia took the game into overtime to defeat Aquinas 5-4. The Bulldogs got their sixth win in the past ten years over the Little Irish (20 wins). Holding Aquinas to only four goals is the strongest defensive performance in the records. Livonia used two, two-goal runs to secure the win. One was in the first and one was in the third. The Little Irish scored three goals in the second quarter. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Going into overtime, both teams had shots at the goal. Aquinas won the face off when Tyler Olbrich picked up the loose ball. They did not get a shot on goal before giving up the ball to the Bulldogs. Livonia took four shots in overtime (missing the first three). Reid Mattle took his fifth shot of the game as time expired in the first overtime period to score the game winning goal for Livonia. Livonia goalie John Stockslader finished with nine saves and Aquinas goalie Tony Deleo finished with three saves.

Livonia Head Coach Brett Wood says, "I give a lot of credit to our kids tonight especially our defensive effort. We never gave up and hung around to keep things close. Each team had two possessions and both coaches used a timeout in OT and with one second left Reid Mattle picked up the ball right in from of the goal for the game winner."

--  Notes The last time the Royal Comets defeated Hilton was in 2011 with a 13-10 win. Although the game was close throughout, Rush Henrietta took an 8-7 lead in the second quarter and never trailed again. Rush- Henrietta was led in scoring by Nick Lenhard (4g-2a) and Brad Schillinger (5g-1a). Midfielder Jake Hughes (3g-1a) took a team leading 14 shots. With fifty-two shots as a team, Schillinger (12 shots) and Hughes took 50% of the shots for the Royal Comets. Attackman Sam Schubach finished with a team leading eight ground balls and was 67% at the face off draw.

Hilton's Zeus Doser finished with 6g-1a. He took ten shots with all six on cage resulting in goals. Attackman Shawn Kimble added another 2g-4a. In the cage, Jarod Kimble finished at 50% with 16 saves. Face off midfielder Hunter Duford led his team with ten ground balls.
