2014 Week 6 |
This week there are multiple Players of the Week award winners. Once again their talents are diverse. Canandaigua junior attackman Connor Hulme, Victor sophomore face off midfielder T.D. Ierlan, Webster Thomas senior defenseman Ryan Nugent and Wayne senior goalie Justin Townsend each have helped their teams excel this season.
Defensive Player of the Week Justin Townsend
Wayne senior goaltender, Justin Townsend has been a first team All Finger Lakes League choice in both his sophomore and junior seasons and has been instrumental in the success that the Eagles have seen in their 9-3 record this year. In his three year varsity career he has (to date) collected 449 saves in over two thousand minutes in the nets. Last week he recorded an elusive shutout when the Eagle defeated Mynderse. He had ten saves in Wayne`s win over Geneva.
Wayne Head Coach Jeff Ugine is proud of his starting goalie. "He has started every game for us for the past three years, and our defense would not be the same without him.
Defensive Player of the Week Ryan Nugent
Ryan Nugent is a senior defenseman for Webster Thomas and also was selected to the All Tournament (Class A) team last year. The take-away king, who is headed to RIT after graduation this year, consistently gives the Titans extra offensive sets. Last week he helped in the Titan wins against Hamburg (Section 6) and Rush-Henrietta, picking up seven ground balls in each game.
Webster Thomas Head Coach Rob Ruller says, "He`s been outstanding all year has had multiple games with over five takes. He has dominated the ground balls in his end and is also an outstanding Captain and leader.
Offensive Player of the Week Connor Hulme
Connor Hulme, a three year Canandaigua attackman, has committed to Quinnipiac College after his 2015 graduation. In the Penfield game last week, Hulme scored his fifth goal of the game to give Canandaigua an 8-7 victory. The Braves have won four games in a row and in each one Hulme has contributed points including two against Hamburg which CA won 11-9. Although Canandaigua lost an 8-7 game with Fairport, Hulme scored three of the seven goals.
According to CA Head Coach Ed Mulheron, "Connor is an outstanding young man with a great work ethic. His impact on a game is much more than what can be found in the scorebook or stat sheet. He is a complete player, who not only scores and distributes the ball but also causes many turnovers when riding.
Offensive Player of the Week T.D. Ierlan
T.D. Ierlan is a Victor sophomore face off wizard who, as a freshman was selected to the Class B All Tournament Team. Last week in two games, his skill at the center of the field helped the Blue Devils win tight games. On Saturday Ierlan won eighty-one percent (26/32) draws as Victor defeated Corning (Section 4) 16-15. He led the ground ball effort in that game with twenty-one. Earlier in the week Victor beat Penfield 12-8 and once again Ierlan was a key factor winning seventy-eight percent and leading the ground ball effort with eight.
Victor Head Coach Jim Andre is a fan of Ierlan`s hard work, "T.D. Ierlan is a true student of the game. His success at the face-off X is not luck. His work ethic and commitment to excellence has paid off for his entire team. T.D. elevates us as a team, and players at all levels can learn from this young man who is so talented, yet so humble about his abilities"
