April 15, 2014 - This week`s Player of the Week award winner are Marcus Whitman senior goalie Merritt Bailey and Spencerport sophomore attackman Colin McElligot. The players were selected from nominations submitted last week.
Defensive Player of the Week Merritt Bailey
The four year staring goalie for Marcus Whitman might have been selected for the Offensive Player of the Week as well, as, last week he scored seven goals while making twenty-five saves (78%).
In their 9-8 win against Midlakes, Merritt made seventeen saves (against seven goals against). Down 7-4 late in the third quarter he scored four goals in a row to tie the game with just two minutes left in the game.
Signing a National Letter of Intent to play at Seton Hill next year, the senior goalie and team leader currently has a career record of 617 saves in his 2,374 minutes in the varsity cage.
Says Head Coach Bruce Teague Jr, "Merritt has been the best player on the field all season for Marcus Whitman and this week proved it again."
Offensive Player of the Week Colin McElligott
The Spencerport sophomore attackman had a 2g-6a game to help Spencerport beat Honeoye Falls-Lima and followed that game with 3g-2a against Eastridge. At this point in the season he has accumulated 17g-18a and has a goals from shots on percentage in 71%.
His coach, Matt Nentarz says, "Colin has become one of our go to players offensively. He has a great understanding of the game."
The Connors and Ferris law firm is sponsoring recognition for a Varsity level Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week this year.
Each week a small committee of SportsFive.NET staff members and Section Five Lacrosse Committee members will create and review review nominations from coaches, players and fans and pick one offensive and one defensive player who have excelled in a game or games during the season.
The award winners will receive a commemorative shirt and will featured on the SportsFive.NET web site.
