Summer Superlatives
 -

NYS MapMany lacrosse players have made the decision to combine their love of the game with post high school education and will be moving on to play at the college level. Some made verbal commitments long ago and some waited until the spring or summer to make their decision. Although some may sign contracts to play, many more simply enroll as students and play without scholarships.

Many of the players have made their decisions public and they have been published on SportsFive.NET. As the announcements move off this front page they are listed on the "Commitments Page" which are available from a button on the "Players Main Page".

Summer Superlatives

- Updated Summer, it seems, is a time to be seen and many Section Five players are attending tournaments and camps. Although the SportsFive team budget doesn`t allow for much traveling, other media outlets have been covering performances at some of the events of summer. What follows are some observations about Section Five players.

Travis Ford, LSM, Thomas, Class of 2016

Left Quote

Not only did the Rochester area product nail two goals on the night, but he also won the halftime fastest shot competition with a 96 mph blast. Ford can sling it from long range, using a stutter step to create separation and get his hands free. Really impressive alley dodger who can shoot well with either hand and place it where the goalie has a hard time making a save.

Casey Vock`s take on the Maverik Showtime

Left Quote

Jamie Trimboli, M/FO, Greece Odyssey/Athena, N.Y. - A skilled and dynamic player who can make an impact at both ends of the field, Trimboli has a good stick, uses both hands when dodging and holds his own as a face-off man. I liked the way he moved with the ball at the top of the box. He buried a big righty crank after finding time and room. Hard-working and smart, you`d want to learn more about him after reading his stat line as a freshman on varsity: 33 goals, 15 assists and 67 ground balls. Looks like he`d do anything you asked of him. A player to watch, it should be interesting to see how he continues to develop.

Austin Fingar, M, Penn Yan, N.Y. - I love this kid`s game and feel like I`ve seen just the tip of the iceberg. He`s got a solid build, can dodge down the alley and brings nice overall athleticism. He made one of the hardest passes a middie can attempt look easy, dodging down the right hash marks and flicked a pass across the crease for an easy finish. High IQ, pretty tough and well rounded abilities. A quiet but very promising recruit who gets extremely high praise from his high school coach Brian Hobart. Fingar was a big part of the stacked Mustangs team that reached the state semis again this year, putting up six goals and five assists as a pure two-way midfielder.

Patrick Barrow, D, Victor, N.Y. - A strong kid who looks like he trains/workouts quite a bit, this guy`s got nice balance to his game, throwing hard checks, showing good footwork and playing good position defense. The more I watch the young defenders, the more I like them, and here`s one of them. Looking forward to learning more about him, as hear he comes from a whole crew of lacrosse-playing brothers.

Receiving an Honorable Mention in the 2015 Class players was Aquinas rising junior defenseman Mike Perotto.

Ty Xanders take on the Maverick Showtime Day 2

Left Quote

Ryan Maloney (Victor `16, N.Y.) is also a nice recruit, putting up an unofficial two goals in a game and showing that he could get a good shot off despite heavy checks and holds.

Brendan Barker (Pittsford `15, N.Y.) looks to be one of the better uncommitted rising juniors in the country. He`s also said to be a terrific linebacker in football, which makes sense considering his large frame, athleticism and ability to frequently put opposing players on the ground. Barker is a little one-handed and not absurdly skilled offensively but is the type of player college coaches clamor for - he has his pick of a bunch of great programs, most notably Maryland and Syracuse.

A pure athlete who was apparently moved from midfield to D recently is Jared Connors (Pittsford Sutherland `16, N.Y.), possessing a significant upside. Connors is rangy, plays fast and throws solid checks. With some molding, he`ll be a top notch defender.

Going to wait a little bit to write about goalies as we get a better idea of consistency. At the moment, the main standouts are Ohio State pledge Willie Klan (Webster Schroeder `15, N.Y.)

Others Who Impressed: Jonathan Perotto (Aquinas Institute `16, N.Y.)

Allen Thibodeau, LSM, Fairport, Class of 2015

Left Quote

Allen Thibodeau, a 2015 LSM from Fairport (Rochester) in Upstate New York, also had to get used to the heat.

“Being from Rochester, this was pretty extreme,” he said. “But the competition was better than most tournaments I have been to and it`s going to make me better as a player."

Did he notice all the college coaches in attendance?

“Mentally, I tried to block them out not get too nervous,” he said. “I wanted to focus on how I played. I feel I did alright. I enjoyed getting to play with other players.”

Willie Klan, Goalie, Webster Schroeder, Class of 2015

Left Quote I`d been hearing great things about Klan for at least a year and finally got the opportunity to watch him live. Bigger than I realized, Klan is poised in net and turned back a bevy of shots, acting as a key cog for the Upstate squad. Hit most of his clears with beautiful passes and was generally strong out of the cage. My guess is that Ohio State can`t wait to for him to be a Buckeye..

Casey Vock`s Notes on Under-Armour Tournament: Upstate vs South

Left Quote

In overtime, it was Upstate`s Trevor Hodgins (Churchville-Chili `14/Ohio State) who netted the game-winner (his third goal of the game), as he drove to his right from X after a restart on the back line, got inside his man and flung a shot to the far side post to win it for Upstate.

... Upstate needed an impressive performance in the cage from Willie Klan (Webster Schroeder `15/Ohio State). Klan was tremendous, getting the start and making at least 8 saves in the first half, according to my count. Klan has very quick hands and sees the ball as well as any goaltender I`ve seen at the high school level. The shots the South were able to land on him were all quality opportunities. Klan`s reflexes are highly impressive and he was on fire against the South...

The Upstate attack got a nice boost when Ben Reeves (Palmyra Macedon `14/Hobart) was inserted into the lineup in the second half. A lefty who played from the wing, Reeves quickly showed himself to be the best quarterback option for this team. In a matter of a few possessions, Reeves had amassed a goal and an assist and you could see his ability to carry and feed well. Though he`s got a slim frame, he had no problem taking his defender to the rack the second time he touched the ball and finished easily.

... Brian Wall (Penfield `14/uncommitted) had [a] nice showing.

Defenders ... and Nick Panara (Pittsford `14/Fairfield) led the way defensively for Upstate

Jake Sproule, Midfield, Penfield, Class of 2014

Left Quote The Penfield rising senior middie has good conditioning, he moves up and down the field without much noticed labor. Sproule is aggressive on both ends of the field, has a bit of a mean streak, which is not bad. Isn`t selfish with the ball and has a laser shot..

Kevin Maguire, Goalie, Pittsford, Class of 2015

Left Quote Again, there was strong between-the-pipes play from the goalies, possibly helped by the fact that shooters were tiring by the second half of their game sessions. Maguire in particular picked up the ball well and made fantastic saves through his small part of the session.

Josh Merkel, Midfield, Irondequoit, Class of 2014

Left Quote This is a player who stood out to me for his overall play. He was good in transition and scored multiple goals while I was watching him, including a nice rip in the All-Star game. He`s got a decent build (about 6-0, probably 170ish), played both ways and even jumped onto other teams who needed some numbers and gave them a boost. He`s a nice shooter and shows solid lacrosse IQ. A contributor on last year`s Irondequoit team, you will see him be asked to do much more this coming season.
