The 2013 Section Five Tournaments began today with Claus C out-bracket games for eight teams. While the top four seeds received a bye in the first round, teams seeded seven through twelve played today and all four of the top seeded teams won their games. HF-L beat Wayne 6-3, Gananda defeated Bath 20-13 and Livonia defeated Marcus Whitman 21-4. In the most exciting game of the first round, Mynderse beat Waterloo 5-4 in overtime.

Two evenly matched teams came to Mynderse Academy stadium to face off in an out bracket game for the Class C tournament. The Indians forced overtime with the final goal of the fourth quarter and then won the game 5-4 with an unassisted goal from A
aron Peterman with 2:10 remaining in the first overtime period.
The game was a story of three momentum changes. The first began with Mynderse controlling the first quarter. The Blue Devils won the first two face offs on technical wins and had the first shots at the cage. They converted on two of their first five shots. The opening goal of the contest was scored on a drive from behind by Peterson. He came three yards off the crease and put the ball high past Waterloo goalie Mark Campbell. Campbell finished with 13 saves for the Indians (62%). Two and a half minutes later the Blue Devils scored again. Their goal came from an interception during a clear with Ben Cafolla intercepting the pass and taking the ball all the way to the goal. Mynderse led 2-0 after the first quarter. In the first quarter, Mynderse defenseman Brody Bently stepped up with two one-on-one takes and helped control the Waterloo offense. Bently at LSM and Mike Millis at close defense were key components to the Mynderse victory.
Mynderse added their third goal just over a minute into the second quarter. The play began with Francis Leddy coming from behind the cage. He drove in and made an impressive pinpoint pass through the defenseman to Mike Barbay for the goal. Approximately halfway through the quarter the Indians started to make strides and change the momentum to their favor. The Blue Devils only took two more shots in the rest of the quarter and only two additional shots in the fourth quarter. Mynderse did not score again for twenty-four minutes and were held to just those four shots in that time. To compare, the Indians took nine shots in the second quarter and another eleven in the third quarter. Although of the twenty shots spanning the second and third quarters only ten were on cage (including their four goals). With 2:21 remaining in the first half, Tim Wright started on a dead ball behind the cage. He drove towards the cage and, after a slide, found Tim Brown open on the crease for the first Indian goal of the night. 1:05 later Wright set up the same move, only this time he drove from the left sideline. The Blue Devils led 3-2 going into halftime.
In the third quarter, the Indians kept up their pressure and their dominance of the game. With 5:36 remaining in the third quarter, Wright stepped up behind the cage. He ran at the goal and found Mike Wright open on the crease for the tying goal. Four minutes later Waterloo took their first and only lead of the game. Wright assisted his fourth goal straight with a feed to Brown. This time he fed from the outside to the crease without a dodge first. Waterloo led 4-3 going into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Mynderse kept their shot count down only adding four shots (two on cage). They scored the tying goal with 10:24 remaining in the game when Millis picked off a pass on the clearing attempted and took the ball in for the goal. Waterloo attempted to take the lead back. They took twelve shots in the final quarter. Wright, a senior, held his team high and fought back to keep the Indians in the game. He had the last shot of the game for Waterloo, but Mynderse goalie Time Trickler came up with a save to send the game to overtime. Trickler finished with 14 saves and an impressive 78% day between the pipes.
In the overtime period, Mynderse won the face off and had the first chance at the ball. They could not get a shot off before Waterloo took the ball back on bad pass. Defenseman Nicholas Stenberg picked up the loose ball and cleared the ball up the field. Stenberg led his team in ground balls with six. The Indians could not control the ball and it was immediately taken back by Ruairi Orlando. Barbay picked up the loose ball and brought it back over the midfield line when Mynderse called a timeout at 2:17 remaining. Peterman started with the ball after the overtime and after dodging past two defenseman, bounced the ball into the top corner of the cage past Campbell to secure the Blue Devils victory.
Mynderse moves on to play at Aquinas in Wednesday's quarter final round.

-- In the second closest game of the night, eighth seeded HF-L defeated ninth seeded Wayne, 6-3. The Cougars only led by a single goal with 3:25 remaining in the contest but then scored the last two goals in the final three minutes. The game was a battle of defenses with both goalies finishing over 67%. For Wayne, Justin Townsend finished with 12 saves (67%) and for HF-L, Bryce Kelly finished with 9 saves (75%). HFL defensemen Aidan Papalia (4) and James Haas (2) also stood out on ground ball counts for the Cougars. For Wayne, defensemen Daniel Markwitz and Santana Deanda both had strong nights.
Wayne started the scoring with the only goal of the first half. In the first quarter, Tim Oddi assisted Jake Moss for the Screaming Eagles goal. They held the lead 1-0 until HF-L tied the game with 9:46 remaining in the third quarter. Tim Breau tied the game with an unassisted goal for the Cougars. HF-L kept up the pressure and never trailed for the remainder of the game. Connor Flaherty scored the next goal (also unassisted) before assisting Breau on the third HF-L goal. Wayne fought back and kept the goal close with an unassisted goal from Oddi with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter. The final goal of the third quarter was scored by Flaherty with an assist from Breau. Flaherty's goal was scored during extra-man offense. HF-L led 4-2 going into the final quarter.
Wayne scored the first goal of the last quarter to make it a one goal game. Andrew Jenkins scored unassisted for the Screaming Eagles. The Cougars added the final two goals in the last three minutes. Peter Pluta and Ryan Kelly scored for HF-L.
The Cougars now move on to play at Geneva on Wednesday.
