-- Although the game was close going into the second half, Thomas outscored Canandaigua 9-2 in the second half on their way to a 13-6 victory over the Braves. Thomas scored seven unanswered goals including five in less than three minutes in the third quarter. During the highly anticipated game, Thomas seemed the stronger team; even during the close periods in the first quarter.
Thomas was aggressive on both sides of the field. On defense, they were pressuring the shooters, forcing the Braves to take rushed shots or limited their shot all together. On offense they were patient until they found a weakness and then exploited it for a goal. The Braves, as strong competitors, stayed in the game for a half, but the Titans kept the pressure up for the whole game and it was too much, this night, for Canandaigua.
The game opened with Canandaigua winning the first face-off on a technical foul. They brought the ball down and tried at the cage. The Titans did not allow them to get a shot off before forcing a bad pass and recovering the ball. During the clear, attackman Eric Munn intercepted the ball and forced a one-on-one with the Titan goalie, John Bezek. He scored his unassisted goal just 0:43 into the contest. Thomas won the next face-off and took the ball down to set up their offense. They moved the ball around until there was an opening on the right side and Kevin Hill scored the first of his 3g for Thomas. Their next shot, which took 1:16 to set up was also a goal. This time the opening came on the left side with Nick Schuman capitalizing. The third Thomas goal was scored with Pat LeMoine running straight at the net from the top of the restraining line and scoring. Thomas led 3-1 with 7:01 remaining. Canandaigua scored the next goal on a fast break. Brian Feldman scored with an assist from Connor Hulme with 4:06 left in the first quarter. Canandaigua tied the game after receiving the ball at midfield after an offsides call by Thomas. Mitchell Schaefer took the ball straight from the midfield line and put it in the back of the net. Thomas didn't want to take a tie into the second quarter and scored again with 0:03 remaining. John Hill recorded his first assist of the game with a pass to LeMoine. Hill finished with 1g-4a of the Titans.
In the second quarter, the pace of the game slowed down and Thomas had trouble hitting the cage. Thomas finished the quarter 0/7 for shots on cage. The Braves scored the only goal of the quarter on an outside shot from Schaefer. The game was tied at halftime, 4-4.
Canandaigua scored the first goal of the second half during a man-up play. Ben Northrup set up a cross-crease pass to Hulme to give the Braves their second lead of the game. The Titans then took control. The Titans tied the game with 8:40 remaining with a feed from behind the cage by J. Hill to Kevin Hill. They kept up the pressure and scored on a fast break goal with J. Hill feeding Jake Giudice. With 2:47 remaining the Titans scored the first of their five goals in less than three minutes. The Titans scored again at 2:03, 0:34, 0:09 and 0:03 to take an 11-5 lead into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Thomas added two and Canandaigua added one. Near the end of the contest, both teams gave their subs playing time. The Braves rotated in all three of their goalies and Thomas subbed in their second goalie. For Thomas, Bezek finished with 7 saves (54%) and Alex Gulisano did not face a shot. For Canandaigua, Michael Cuciti finished with 8 saves. Luke MacNeil finished with 1 save and 1 goal against in two minutes. Jon Gelinas did not face a shot in the final minute of play.
Midfielder Justin Bird finished 74% at the face off draw and with a team leading 13 ground balls. Of the 13 ground balls, 11 were off face-offs. Attackman J. Hill finished with seven ground balls for the Titans. For the Braves, Midfielders Connor Moore and Schaefer finished with four ground balls each.
