-- In their second contest in three days, Gananda once again defeated Waterloo. This time the Blue Panthers won 8-7. (It was 9-8 on Saturday). The Blue Panthers increased their record to 7-1 with their only loss 14-12 against HFL. In a striking similarity to Saturday, Gananda once again scored four of the last six goals to secure their victory.
This game was much more about runs of multiple goals than on Saturday. Each team had a set of three unanswered goals and a few back-to-back goals. Waterloo scored the opening goal with 4:52 remaining in the first quarter. Mike Wright assisted Brenn Solomon to put the Indians on the board. Two minutes later and Kyler Friesner assisted Zach Rink to tie the game. Waterloo's Tim Wright scored unassisted to give the Indians the lead. With 0:44 remaining, Gananda tied the game at 2-2 with an unassisted goal from Friesner.
In the second quarter, Waterloo made a strong move. The Indian's outscored the Blue Panthers 3-1 with three straight goals to close out the quarter. Gananda was held scoreless for over 13 minutes. Nick Rapp scored the first goal with 9:55 remaining in the half to give the Blue Panthers the temporary lead. Three unassisted goals finished out the half with Patrick Sobus scoring the first and Tim Wright scored the next two. Waterloo led 5-3 at halftime.
The beginning of the second half saw two penalties that the Blue Panthers converted to re-tie the game. Friesner scored in the first man-up situation with an assist from Josh Anken. Anken then scored his own unassisted man-up goal for Gananda. Anken's second goal of the quarter gave Gananda the lead back for the first time since 9:55 remaining in the second quarter. Waterloo was held scoreless for the entire third quarter (16:13 spanning the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters). Gananda led 6-5 after three quarters.
Waterloo tied the game with the opening goal of the fourth quarter. Tim Wright scored his fourth goal to bring the game to 6-6 with 8:00 remaining. Midfielder Riley Palmer scored the next two goals to secure the win for the Blue Panthers. The first was unassisted and less than one minute later Rapp assisted his second goal. The Indians attempted to fight back in the last six minutes but only scored a single goal with 2:34 remaining from M. Wright. The Indians had two more attempts at the cage after Wright's goal, but neither was on cage.
In the cage for Gananda, Brandon Smith finished with 10 saves (59%). Defenseman Dylan Joy led in ground balls with 15. A high percentage of Joy's ground balls came off face-offs. Midfielder Rapp finished with four and attackmen Rink and Zach Binggeli finished with three each. A key component of the victory was possession from face-off's. Gananda combined for 78% at the face-off draw; Rapp finished 10/13, Palmer finished 3/4 and Kyle Lombardozzi finished 1/1. For Waterloo, Mark Campbell finished with 11 saves (58%).
