Saturday: Brighton over Gates, Fairport and both R-H Win

Brighton and Gates Chili played a good night game tonight. The Barons won 8-6. Fairport was a big winner over Victor 16-4 and Rush-Henrietta beat Waterloo 10-3. Down south, McQuaid Jesuit lost to Strake Jesuit of Texas 7-5. The game was played in Tampa.

--  There was an exciting non-league Monroe County contest tonight at Brighton as the Barons defeated Gates Chili 8-6. The back-and-forth scoring saw neither team up by more than three goals during the game. Senior midfielder Alex Ballatori scored the first of his four goals the game with an assist from freshman attackman Max Coke at 8:01. The Spartans returned at 3:14 with a goal by senior middie (A/M) Matt Martin and the scored was tied at 1-1 at the end of the first quarter.

Brighton v GatesThe busiest quarter started with senior midfielder Casey Kopp scoring the first of his 2g-1a at 10:11 but Gates came back on the next face off with senior attackman Phil Ruff tying the game at 2-2. Senior middie Jon Taliento gave the Spartans their first lead of the game when his took the ball from senior Casey Pritchard at 7:06. The Barons scored the next two goals (Ballatori unassisted and Coke from junior attackman Orian Furber) but Gates Chili tied the game once again with an unassisted score by Ruff. With just over one minute left in the half, Coke scored on a feed from Kopp to give Brighton the 5-4 lead at the halftime break.

Brighton took their biggest of the game with two goals scored early in the third quarter. Kopp scored his second goal of the night with an assist from junior attackman Ethan Appleton. Ballatori scored an unassisted goal at 9:46 to put the Barons in the lead 7-4, but Gates finished the quarter with an unassisted goal by Martin.

Each team scored one goal in the final quarter. Ballatori scored an unassisted goal at 9:29 and senior midfielder Mike Wentworth scored the final goal of the game at 4:32.

Leading the ground ball effort for the Barons were Kopp with six and senior defensemen John Bender with five and Omari Henderson with four. Face offs were split between the team with each one winning nine. In the cage, Brighton junior goalie Andy Wong recorded seven saves (54%). return to top
