| It was another very exciting season for Irondequoit as they captured their third straight Class B Sectional title and then advanced all the way to NYS championships before falling to Garden City. The Eagles final record was 19-3 with their only regular season losses to Ithaca and Fairport. Seeded first in the Class B Tournament they beat Brighton, Victor, and Canandaigua to take the championship. They then beat Hamburg and Jamesville-DeWitt in the early rounds of the NYS tournament.
Their 4-0 record game them the Monroe County D-2 title.
The deep offense had twenty different players scoring for the Eagles, but senior attackman Nick Doktor led the team in goals, assists and points with 43g-26a (60 pts). Senior midfielder Gunnar Miller also led the team in goal production with his 43g-18a. Six players recorded over thirty points each. Senior midfielders Briele Caples (31g-11a) and George Jerman (23g-8a) were joined by senior attackmen Connor Enright (40g-14a) and Jake Schmidt (31g-12) on that list. Defense was equally superb with senior goalie Eric Fischer taking the majority of goal time and recording 161 saves (61%). Fischer saw playing time in each of four years on the Varsity team and finished with a career 343 saves (58%). Fischer was not the only defensive treasure as he had a strong defense in front, led by seniors Andrew Cordes and Loren Caples and juniors Eli Kenny and Sam Lopez.
As befitting champions, the Eagles had lots of awards at the end of the season and nearly the entire starting team earned all-league recognition. Doktor, Enright, Miller, Andrew Cordes and Fischer made the first team Monroe County D-2 team. Schmidt, Briele Capes, Jerman, Loren Caples and Kenny made the second team. Schmidt, Doktor, Miller, Andrew Cordes and Fischer made the Section Five Class B All-Tournament team. Briele Caples who score thirteen points in the tournament, including six goals in the finals, was named the tournament MVP. Eric Fischer was named a USLacrosse Academic All American and Nick Doktor and Gunnar Miller were named USLacrosse All Americans. Andrew Cordes, Doktor, Fischer and Miller were named to the D&C Top 16 players list. Andrew Cordes, Doktor, Enright, Fischer and Miller were named to the first team All-Section Five list. Miller was named MC-D2 Player of the Year and Eric Huss was named MC-D2 Assistant Coach of the Year. Head Coach Craig Whipple was named Monroe County D-2 Coach of the Year and was also named the D&C Coach of the Year. Gunnar Miller was named SportsFive Offensive Player of the Year. The team earned a NYS Scholar / Athlete Awards with a team average of 90.336.
There was a great deal of excitement during the fall NLI signing as a large number of Irondequoit players planned to continue to play in college. Seniors choosing to continue their careers were Cordes (Towson), Brandon Costanzo (St. John Fisher), Doktor (Pennsylvania), Enright (Mercyhurst), Fischer (Binghamton), Miller (West Point), Ryan Utz (Gordon) and Garrett Warren (VMI). |
