March, 2011 -
Penfield finished fourth last season in the highly competitive Monroe County D-1 with a record of 12-6 (4-2 in MC-D1). Of their six losses only two were by more than three goals. Close games against Fairport (1 goal) and Penn Yan (2 goals) could easily have gone the other
way. Penfield did show high power wins over eventual Section Five Class B Champion Irondequoit and Section Six Class A Champion Orchard Park. The Patriots were seeded third in the Class A Tournament and finished as seeded with a loss to Fairport in the quarter finals.
The Patriots lost ten players to graduation, including four with end of season honors and two that are continuing to play at the college level. The hardest felt loss will be attackman Alex Miles. Miles finished with first team league honors and second team All Section honors. He finished the season with 46g-6a and was tied for eleventh on the goals list for the entire Section. Also graduating from the offense was midfielder Dan O'Brien. He finished with 15g-11a and HM honors. He will continue to play this season at Mercyhurst. Attackman Matt Springer and defenseman Trevor Girouard both received HM honors at their respective positions. Springer led the team in assists with 14g-22a. Midfielder Fred Crilly has continued to play at Alfred this season.
Penfield returns one of the largest senior classes in the section. Last season they had twenty-two juniors on their roster and twenty of them have continued this season as seniors. Ten players received end of season honors last season and return this year: two from first team, three from second team, and five from the HM list.
The strength of Penfield is their defense. They are returning 5 of 7 defensive starters. Leading the charge is goalie Keith Keehn. He finished last season with 129 saves (53%). Coach John Schembri praises Keehn writing, "(he) is one of the best leaders in the goal that I have had the pleasure of
coaching." In front of Keehn will be two three year starters, juniors Charlie Cummins (second team) and Nick Kimmins (HM). In addition to strong close-defenseman, the Patriots return one of the top LSM in the Section, Justin Rehm. Rehm was named first team All League and second team All Section at LSM last season. Next season he will be attending Siena. Also at LSM will be senior Kyle Covley (HM). He is a three sport athlete at Penfield and was named to fifth team All State at quarterback in Football and recently set a school record for career points in Basketball.
Offensively, the midfield is stronger than the attack. At the midfield are Matt Bilak and Matt Condon. Bilak finished last season with 31g-21a and Condon finished with 17g-13a. Bilak was named to the second team at midfield and the All Tournament team. He also tied Miles for total points last season with 52. Condon was named to the second team as well and will be attending Mercyhurst in the fall. Also at the midfield is face-off specialist Connor Russell. He finished last season with an over 70% face-off win percentage and was named to the first team at Face-off midfielder and second team All Section. He will look to increase his presence this season at both offense and defense. He is looking to attend Syracuse after high school.
With the graduation of Springer and Miles, the attack is open for new players to step up. Senior Andrew Huntington, who played midfield last season, will move to lead the attack. He finished last season with 15g-11a and HM honors. Mike Larkin, also a senior, finished last season with 16g-2a and HM attack honors.
With the current league orientation, MC-D1 teams can schedule six additional games. Coach Schembri has a tough out of league schedule with games against West Genesee, Lindenhurst, Penn Yan, West Seneca East, Orchard Park and a second game against Webster Thomas.
